A Teacher Menter Changed Her Life

As a teenage girl growing up in America, Erin Smith’s aims in life differ from her aims when she got older. She thought working with animals, either at a zoo or veterinary, would be a cool job. Smith was thinking more about the things that she liked to play with rather than a lifelong career.

Now Dr. Erin Smith realized her dreams and obtained the job she wants as Instructor Professor, College of Mathematics and Statistics at Zayed University.

From a playful teenage to a responsible women Professor Erin went to high school, and the idea of what kind of job she wanted to have in the future began to develop itself further. In her second and third years of high school she took marketing and accounting classes. Both, of which, she greatly enjoyed due to the teacher. Professor Erin was particularly “adept at accounting,” since she was “adept in math.” As part of her accounting class, she and her peers opened a local bank branch in her school. Out of that, she and another student received jobs at the local branch. “We felt very fortunate to be bank tellers at 15,” she said.  It was from that class and its teacher that she decided to pursue a degree in accounting in college.

When she went to college to study accounting, she had an eye-opening experience. In some of her first classes, Calculus for Business and Accounting, she was bored and did not like them. She could recall sitting in her accounting class and thinking to herself, “there is no way I can do this for the rest of my life.” It was after that class that she walked straight to the registrar to change her major and schedule. She decided then that a math degree was the right path for her. After making that decision and completing a semester at the university, she had to withdraw for personal reasons. She did not return to college for another one and a half years.

As she returned “a different one”, she had an advisor assigned to her who was also her Calculus teacher. They developed a strong relationship and she is now and has been her mentor since that first class. “She is one of the main reasons that I chose to be a teacher at the college level,” she said. “She has given me so much over the years that I can only hope to do for students what she has done for me.”

During her last year at college, she worked as a teacher assistant for a general education class. It was in this role, as a recitation teacher, that her love of teaching truly began to “blossom.” Up until that time, she had been uncertain whether teaching was the field for her. By working with the professor and leading the recitation classes, she knew that she wanted to teach, particularly at the college level. “Since then, I have been working to pursue that career,” Smith added.

Professor Erin Smith cannot imagine a career that would bring her more inner joy than teaching. She has always wanted to feel that she was contributing to society and improving the way of life. “Through teaching, I feel I can do both of these things,” she said.

Zayed University Student Ambassador, Sara Abdullah Al Muhairi explained that many people associate the word “disciplined classroom” as a class where students are sitting quietly, listening, and taking notes. Although discipline is a necessary component of any classroom, this is not how Professor Erin Smith implements discipline in her classroom. In her classroom, she puts discipline into practice by creating an environment where we are respectful to ourselves and each other, exercise self-control and responsibility, paying attention, and actively participating in class.

Another student at Zayed University, Maha Khalid, mentioned that a key component in any classroom is the development of rapport with students. By finding a balance of friendliness, students feel comfortable and are more likely to share their ideas and their opinions. “This is exactly what is happening with Dr. Smith, she understands us and behaves like a friend with us,” Maha said.

Murdering a Wife is Cheaper Than Divorce

On March 11, 2013, a 23 years old husband from India murdered his wife with the help of his 28 years old Pakistani friend. After that they wrapped her body in a bin bag and dumped it in the desert. On September 22, 2013 the bag was discovered on the Dubai to Al Ain Road by a municipality cleaner who spotted the woman’s head protruding and called the police. When officers tried to contact the woman’s husband, they discovered he had left the country from six months on the same day as her death – March 11. Looking for Alaska is A Great Example of Storytelling in A Book

A great example of storytelling in a book is “Looking for Alaska” by John Green.  The book is not separated by chapters but by series of days. A before and after with a major plot twist in between. During the before, the author describes the process of Miles’s moving to school dorms, meeting new friends and falling in love with his friend named Alaska. Miles and Alaska then finally confront their feelings and enjoy each other’s company. On the day of, which is the day Alaska abruptly sneaks out of the dorms with the help of her friends, crying and drunk without an explanation. She gets into an accident causing her death. After that sudden climax, the story then starts dividing by days after, referring to after Alaska’s death. After a few weeks of sadness and confusion, They try to find out whether she committed suicide or was a victim of drunk driving, they find out why she left in the first place which was because she missed her mother’s birthday and as her mother had passed away a long time ago, it was her yearly ritual to visit her grave with flowers, but this year she forgot, which explains why she was not well before leaving.  Everyone draws a separate conclusion to what had really happened but I guess we’ll never know.

One whiff of perfume brings back years of memories

I woke up very lazy this morning. My night was not that good; I had to wake up more than once during the night, the feeling of loneliness kept me awake. I went to the bathroom but instead of taking my morning shower, I was remembering my life month ago. I remembered the first day when I joined the army; my friends in the military camp, how we used to play together, study together, eat and sleep together. We were together all the time it is hard to be alone again. I did not want to graduate; I wish if it was not only a summer military camp so I could join it forever.

The song “Summer time sadness” was playing in my mind.

“I’ve got that summertime, summertime sadness

Sa Sa summertime, summertime sadness

Got that summertime, summertime sadness

Oh, oh oh oh

I think I’ll miss you forever

Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky

Later is better than never

Even if you are gone I’m gonna drive drive drive”

I took a quick shower while singing very loud. I did not want to miss the class so I was running to my dressing room when my mother knocked on the door. As I opened the door, she said “Good morning Mai.” I replied, “Good morning mum, why are you up so early?” She answered with a worry smile on her face that she just wanted to check that I’m fine.I pretend that am busy with brushing my hair when I said, “of course I’m fine, why I would not be!”  She explained that it is the first day after the summer vacation, and she knew that I feel lonely after leaving the military camp.

After she left, while am closing the door; I saw the black handbag that I used to use during the summer behind the door. I grabbed the bag, took all the stuff out and I found a small pink Burberry perfume.  I bought myself this perfume the day before I joined the army and I loved how softly romantic it smelled on me. I bought it while my friends and I were at the mall buying the last things that we would take to the camp with us. As soon as I smelled that perfume, I went to another world. I was not in my room anymore; I was not home. I remembered my thoughts while I was in the army “I’m stronger than anything, no one will let me down I need to be the source of my happiness, and I will not depend on anyone.”

That smell brought up all the strengths that I felt this summer, that smell brought up the new Mai, the new thoughts and the new decisions. Even if I were not in the army; even if I’m not with my friends, the new strength, believes are with me and would be with me all the time. Leaving a place or people does not mean that it is done, as long as the memory is still alive.  This perfume has changed my mood, my mind and my morning. Smell is our most primitive and least understood sense. Perfume manipulates that sense, instantly reminding us of good times past, and speaking of glamour and sophistication to those who get close. Having good times is needed but we have to accept that these good times will end, and we have to accept the normal average days even if we are lonely.

As I went out of my room, I saw my mother so I told her that I love her, am fine and I feel very happy this morning. I asked her not to worry about my. She replied with a warm smile “thanks god, I love you more.”
